It’s only an entry-level job, so who cares?
Employers court disaster at the hands of hourly employees who cannot be
trusted. The horror stories fall into several categories
Why use Checkit?
- Aides hired to care for such vulnerable patients as infants, residents
of assisted living facilities, people with disabilities or mentally ill
individuals, present high risks to their employers. A company unwittingly
hired an aide with a record of six felony convictions, who then
murdered a severely disabled cerebral palsy patient in his care. The
employer was found liable, for negligent hiring. Settlement: $26.5 million
- The top executive of a New England agency was fired recently when his
board of directors discovered, through an anonymous phone call, that he
had embezzled significant funds from his previous employer. Media reports
labeled the directors negligent, as they had not bothered to check the
executive’s background before hiring him.
- Several high-profile legal cases have featured a low-level employee- a
stock employee or cashier- who sexually assaulted another employee when
the two were alone in an elevator or on night duty with only a skeleton
crew. When the attacker has a criminal record that did not come to light
until after the assault, the victim is likely to win a lawsuit against the
company.
- Criminal record checks must be done or you are risking the lives and
livelihoods of your employees. CheckIt investigators perform
real-time physical searches of county records, NOT DATABASE SEARCHES
- Beware of databases sold by states that centralize their conviction
records; they will be out of date immediately.
- To find out what the applicant was convicted of requires visiting the
appropriate county courthouse in person to obtain the record and case
disposition.
